Holmegaard flared glass bowl by Per Lutken 1960

Scandinavian glass in the 1950’s and 1960’s was at the height of fashion. Swedish makers such as Orrefors came up with new techniques but it was Holmegaard of Denmark that lead on new elegant and simple forms thanks mainly to the great glass designer Per Lutken. This beautiful blue tinged flared glass bowl is the epitome of stylish simplicity. The height varies slightly as does the diameter so it isn’t quite symmetrical. It’s a good size

The design dates to the mid 1950’s. Holmegaard pieces were engraved in the 1950’s and up to around 1962 with the PL monogram and the year. After 1962/63 they stopped putting the year and just used a 5 figure production number. By the late 1960’s most pieces only had a sticky label with no engraved factory or designer marks, presumably to save costs. This piece is dated 60 for 1960.

No chips or cracks, just minor signs of wear if you look very closely.

Notes
Holmegaard like many of the top quality Scandinavian makers were at their peak in the 1950’s , 60’s and early 70’s. Gradually they all declined and lost market share to cheap imported glass so by the early 21st Century they like others were a shadow of their former selves with remaining production mostly outsourced leaving very few traditionally trained glass blowers and makers as machinery and cheap foreign labour make the norm. Many thousands were employed in the major European glass companies with many firms disappearing.
