https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/pure-imaginationNorwegian brass and black adjustable lamp by Høvik Lys c 1960
We sourced this lovely lamp in Sweden from photos without knowing who had made it as we thought it was very stylish and well made. We then realised from the label to the base that it was Norwegian and then eventually discovered the maker. This led us to a Norwegian book on the factory by Mats Linder which we then had sent over from Norway ! We buy things we like , and then do research to find out more when possible. Much more fun than buying standard pieces !
Høvik Lys were the main lighting company in Norway from the 1930’s until the 1980’s, mainly producing pieces for the home market . They had many important architectural commissions as Norway rebuilt itself after the German occupation during the 2nd World War, but they also produced domestic pieces like this smart design. They had 3 designers in their team, the best known being Jonas Hidle, but as many designs were anonymous apart from major commissions it’s virtually impossible to attribute their domestic pieces to any one of the 3, although some people do apparently !
It’s shown in a group shot at an Exhibition in 1961. Its floor lamp model 5757 and Mats Linder says “presumably late 1950’s". Stylistically it dates to 1955-1960.
Condition
It’s been rewired and refitted to current UK standards. The black enamelling and the brass finishes are all in lovely vintage condition throughout. As with all vintage pieces you do have to expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.
Notes
A rare design, it took 3 google searches before we found one shown.
