Set of 4 Erik Kirkegaard teak chairs Model 49B

The Danish designer Erik Kirkegaard is best known for his various chair that he designed in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Model 49 was designed in 1956 with an upholstered back and only 3 legs, this is Model 49B which was designed a little later and is a more practical variant that was more successful. Made for Høng Stolefabrik who specialised in making dining and desk chairs as their name suggests as Stolefabrik translates as chair maker.

I could write a flowery description saying how wonderful they are, but i don’t need to as the photos show that!

Dimensions: 56cms at widest point, 51cms width of seat, seat height 41cms, back height 73cms

Condition:

Cleaned and oiled with no obvious marks or damage. The black vinyl seats are in good vintage condition but can be easily re-upholstered in either leather or fabric. Our in-house upholsterer can quote for this and can advise on materials.

Notes:

There were a number of specialist chair making companies in Denmark in the 1950’s and 1960’s such as Høng Stolefabrik, Schou Andersen and others that could produce dining chairs of far more sophistication and quality than any British makers of the time. British cabinet making was equal at times to Danish, and we produced some great designers, but they were limited by what could be made so no British chair of the time approaches the best of Danish.
