Stylish set of 6 1960’s chairs by Elliotts of Newbury

Elliotts of Newbury used the tradename of EON and produced well made furniture in the 1960’s often. They made a number of budget ranges, but these lovely comfortable chairs were from a premium range which when new was nearly twice as expensive as their standard ranges.

The frames are afrormosia, often called African teak with laminated backs veneered in an exotic wood called zebrano. Zebrano has a stripy grain and was used by EON in the early 1960’s. We have a 1964 EON leaflet which shows this model.

These chairs turn up occasionally usually in their original black vinyl which doesn’t meet current UK Fire Regulations. Our in-house upholsterer has re-upholstered them in a lovely green wool fabric by Camira which suits the wood really well.

The carver chairs are particularly stylish with their wrap around afrormosia arms.

Designed by Norman McCarroll

Condition
The frames in lovely vintage condition with no obvious damage. The chairs have been newly upholstered in a lovely green wool by Camira Fabrics. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.

Notes
We came across Norman McCarroll on a research trip to The British Library in 2024 when going through original copies of a trade paper called The Cabinet Maker. In a short article his name was mentioned as being their long time in-house designer. We’ve not been able to come up with any other mention of him so if anyone has any information about him please let us know. One of a number of very good British furniture designers of the time who worked quietly behind the scenes designing pieces that were very successful back in the day.
