Superb set of 8 France and Daverkosen chairs Model 186 by Arne Vodder

This is without doubt the best set of teak dining chairs we’ve had for sale in 20 years of selling Mid-Century furniture. Model 186 was designed by one of the greats of Danish design Arne Vodder in 1956 and only produced until about 1960. It’s really unusual to have a set of 8 as they usually only appear in sets of 6 or as single carver chairs.

France and Daverkosen was a partnership that ended in about 1960 when Mr France took his son into the business and it then became France and Son before being taken over by Cado in about 1965. Model 186 was taken out of production apparently at about the same time and was replaced by a simpler less elegant model. Mr France was English and the firm was one of the few Danish firms to specifically target the British market. For an excellent history and further information about France and Daverkosen go to MCM Interiors where you’ll find a great Blog about the company and the dating of marks and labels.

Beautifully sculptured teak throughout with an unusual use of rattan for the backs this set would have been very expensive when new. In the 1950’s and well into the 60’s most British people only bought sets of 4 or 6 dining chairs, so it is always hard to find original sets of 8 like this beautiful set.

As with others we’ve seen of this model online the original foam to the seats had perished leaving them flat and uncomfortable. The original black leather had aged and faded differently from chair to chair and couldn’t be saved so we’ve had them re-upholstered with new foam and a lovely black leather.

Condition
The teak frames have been cleaned and oiled and are looking great. The rattan is in great vintage condition with only very small signs of wear. As per the description the leather and foam is newly done. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.

Notes
The chairs came with the beautiful teak and rosewood dining table shown in some of the photos. From the same source there was a rare A Younger dining table of similar design to the table, and we believe the table to be an extremely rare model designed and made by the same company in about 1960. The table looks wonderful with the chairs and is for sale separately and there is more information on that listing.
