It’s unusual for us to come across a really good sideboard that we’ve not seen before after over 20 years specialising and researching Mid-Century furniture design. It’s also really unusual to use solid teak of such a size as is needed for a long sideboard. We think it’s British as 228.5cms is 7ft 6″. Through research we now know all the main makers and what they produced, but there were still a few old established small traditional makers like B Cohen who made pieces by designers such as Andrew Milne in very small numbers. These firms didn’t produce catalogues and rarely labelled their pieces so unless they were illustrated in trade articles such as in The Cabinet Maker it’s hard to trace models like this. We’ve been through all the late 1950’s and 60’s issues at The British Library where we’ve made a number of discoveries in the past and it’s not shown in any that we’ve seen.
The box joints to the top and the reeded doors are both unusual features which would have been expensive to make. Even the back is planked teak whereas most Danish ones have just cheap plywood backs.
Condition
Fully cleaned and oiled. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.
