Two Gimson and Slater rock n rest chairs for re-upholstery


We love these stylish and comfortable chairs, and have had a few in the past as well as a rare sofa set. The design comes from Norway by a famous company there called Rastad and Relling who designed for a number of makers. They must have sold production rights to Gimson and Slater as well as a Dutch company. The metal ratchet which allows the position to be altered or for the chair to rock is as always marked Made in Norway.


They had been nicely re-upholstered in recent years for the previous owners. One has very clean upholstery and has obviously seen little use so if you like the pale oatmeal fabric then it’s fine “as is ”. The other is rather grubby and has been used a lot so will need replacing. We’ve priced them “as is ”. Our upholsterer will charge £250 per chair including VAT to re-upholster them in your choice of colour and fabric and you will need to supply 3 metres of fabric per chair. We can arrange and order fabric from our usual suppliers of Camira, Romo and Abraham Moon who between them have a very good varied selection which is normally in stock.


Rastad and Relling employed a number of now well known designers in the early 1960’s, but they rarely named them at the time. The most obvious candidate for this model would be probably Sigurd Ressell. At the time Gimson and Slater advertised as being designed in Norway.

Condition
The oak and teak frames fully cleaned and oiled and looking great with no obvious marks, damage or repairs. The upholstery as per description. As with all vintage pieces you do have to expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.


Notes
Gimson and Slater were best known for their upholstered furniture , but also made dining suites in the 1960’s. They had a very talented in-house designer, but did go to Norway for these chairs and their later replacements which we occasionally also come across.
