ANTIQUE EDWARDIAN PAINTED WOODEN GARDEN SEAT BY JOHN P WHITE OF THE PYGHTLE WORKS, BEDFORD

A handsome and stylish bench. Very well made with simple lines and understated design flourishes.

John Parish White (1855-1917) of The Pyghtle Works in Bedford, was most well known as a high-quality, Arts and Crafts joiner and manufacturer of garden furniture, statuary and chimney pieces, but was also known for producing furniture designs for architect H. Ballie Scott. In addition to their works in Bedford, John P. White had offices and showrooms at 24 Margaret Street, London and at 134 New Bond Street, London. Their furniture was also sold by Heal's and Liberty & Co.

Looking through old catalogues from the early 20th century, it has been possible to identify this model as the ‘Wrest Design‘.

This bench probably dates from the early part of the 20th century, circa 1900-1920 in date.

Provenance: previously at Shardeloes Manor in Buckinghamshire.

Overall, the bench is in good, solid vintage condition, and all the joints seem secure. There is wear commensurate with age throughout. The multiple layers of paint are naturally worn in places. We believe the blocks underneath the legs to be later additions.

Approximate measurements: 180cm wide x 47cm deep x 88cm high. The seat is 40cm high.
