An utterly charming depiction of a girl in pleated dusky pink skirt, lace top, flowers in her hair and a red beaded drop earring. She is leaning on a grey painted buffet with a vase of flowers on top, echoing those in her hair. She has a wonderfully inquisitive look on her face with rosy cheeks.
Painted in the French Provincial style with great sensitivity capturing the sitters character to great effect.
Overall a hugely decorative painting using a fantastic muted colour palette and of great subject matter in a dark
Probably dating from the mid 19th Century period.
Signed to the lower right ‘P Gautier’, who is believed to be Saint-Christophe-du-Ligneron is a commune in the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region in western France.
The painting largely in good vintage condition and the majority of the image is free from significant damage, but there is wear throughout. It was rescued from a country barn and is therefore in a timeworn condition commensurate with this. The bottom edge of the canvas has worn away somewhat and there is a small hole in the canvas on the vase of flowers. There are a couple of areas of flaked paint and craquelure. We believe the wear adds to the romantic charm and aesthetic of the work and tells its story.
Overall measurements: 81cm x 65cm x 3cm .
