ANTIQUE ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING DEPICTING A DOG (GERMAN SHEPHERD/ALSATIAN)

A charming depiction of a German Shepherd with an unusual composition, it feels intimate and sensitive, almost like a family photograph, perhaps the artist’s own dog or a dog they had a real connection or bond with.

Painted in a skilful manner with quick, confident, almost impressionist brushstrokes. The artist has really managed to capture the sensitive emotion and body language of the dog to great effect.

The canvas is stamped ‘Young, 137 Gower St. WC’ for Percy Young, a London based art supplies company who was operational at that address between 1880-1904. Although there is a later inscription on the stretcher for ‘Michael Francis’ dated ‘1950’, that was probably a later owner rather than the artist. Due to the date of the canvas and looking at the painting I would probably date it to somewhere between 1900 and 1910.

There is also a woodland landscape painted verso. Due to the close proximity, being on the same street and directly opposite, Percy Young supplied the majority of canvases for the artists at The Slade School of Art. Taking into account that both sides of the canvas were painted, you can draw a likely assumption that this canvas was worked on by an art student, probably at the Slade. Some notable artists served by Young were Augustus John, Gwen John, Walter Sickert, Stanley Spencer, Camille Pissarro, and James McNeill Whistler.

Overall the painting is in good vintage condition, and the image largely survives well. There is wear throughout commensurate with age including a small hole to the lower left of the composition. The canvas has also naturally come a little loose from the stretchers over time. This could be re-stretched if so desired but display perfectly well as it is.
