A handsome mirror of fairly small proportions. A hand carved circular pine frame with gilt gesso decoration and applied giltwood balls and an ebonised reeded slip.
Dating from the late Regency, early 19th century period circa 1820s-1830s.
Original period convex glass with a dullish grey sparkle.
Mirrors of this type are sometimes known as butlers mirrors as the curved "fish-eye" glass gave servants a wide-angle view to watch over dining rooms or parlours.
Being an original early 19th century example there are some signs of wear throughout but we think these add to its overall decorative appeal. The original gilding is rubbed in places, revealing the clay-red undercoat. There are also some shrinkage cracks in the frame as you might expect. The gilt gesso is worn in places revealing the pine underneath, most noticeably on some of the balls. The glass is free from damage. Overall the mirror is in good vintage condition with signs of wear throughout consistent with age but no serious issues.
Approximate overall measurements: 38cm diameter x 6cm deep.
