ANTIQUE INDIAN ARTICULATED FISH SCULPTURE

Depicting a stylised fish in a naive folky style, with great character. Cleverly made with articulated scaled sections that undulate from side to side to emulate a swimming fish.

Originating from India and probably dating from the late 19th or possibly early 20th century during the late Victorian period.

These fish became known as Medina fish due to the fact that a collection of six were recovered from the wreck of the SS Medina that was torpedoed in 1917 whilst returning from India with 80 cases of Lord Carmichael’s (The Governor on Bengal), possessions . The contents of the wreck was salvaged in the 1980s including the ‘Medina’ fish.

This example is in excellent vintage condition with only minor cosmetic wear consistent with age. The articulation works well and both fins are present and move as they should.

This is the largest example of a Medina fish I can find. Approximate measurements: 47cm long (18 1/2”) x 10cm wide x 7cm high.
