A blustery rural landscape that captures the movement and life of the scene to great effect expertly captured by the artist using brushstrokes which become quite thick and impasto in places partly abstracting the form of the landscape using line. The artist has managed to take inspiration from impressionist and expressionist masters of old whilst not becoming a caricature of those movements and making the artwork a stand out piece in its own right.
The artist has used an intriguing and clever technique with a wonderful colour palette using base layers of shades of brown overlaid with more vibrant shades which sometimes verge on the expressionist, which in turn provide an expressive representation of the landscape itself.
Leonard Bennetts was born in New Zealand in 1933 and settled in London in the post war period. He exhibited widely in London, most notably at the Royal Academy, Chelsea Arts Club, the Mall Galleries and his work was included in the 1983 Haywood Gallery exhibition "Landscape in Britain 1850-1950".
