A Japanese hōhin (宝瓶) in dark unglazed stoneware, made by Hiroto Ono.
His impressed seal is on the [base / inside of the lid]. Sold without box.
The hōhin is the handleless teapot of the Japanese green tea tradition, made
for gyokuro and high-grade sencha. Those teas are infused at low temperature,
so the vessel is lifted by the body rather than by a handle.
The body is wheel-thrown in charcoal-grey iron-bearing clay, compressed to a
low globular form, with throwing rings visible around the waist. Unglazed
throughout. The lid seats flush into a recessed well and carries a hand-modelled
dragon-head finial, the scales cut individually and the tail worked in low
relief across the lid face. A single air hole sits behind the finial. The pot
pours over a wide lateral lip, behind which a pierced strainer is formed
directly in the wall.
