A handmade tea set in Hagi ware (萩焼), from the coastal kiln town in Yamaguchi where potters have worked their prized local clay for over four centuries. The set comprises a hōhin — the handleless teapot favoured for fine gyokuro and sencha, poured with two hands in the slow manner the leaf deserves — and two small cups sized to match.
Each piece carries the marks of true Hagi: a warm clay body showing through a soft, milky glaze, and the gentle irregularity that comes only from the hand. The glaze deepens and settles with years of use, taking on the character of the tea it holds, which is the quality the Japanese have long prized in Hagi above almost any other ware. The set is made by Seki Taian and carries the maker's stamp.
The teapot stands 9 cm high and 8 cm across; each cup measures 5 cm in height and diameter, an intimate service made for attention rather than volume. It sits as naturally on a tea tray or a low table as it does on an open shelf where good objects are kept.
Curated by Renaras, an Amsterdam atelier devoted to Japanese textiles and objects.
