Item Details

A pair of oval serving plates by the Japanese potter Seigan Yamane (山根清玩), each glazed in a deep cobalt that pools from a pale blue centre out to an indigo rim, with an iron-brown edge framing the form. Both plates carry the potter's impressed seal to the reverse.
The glaze is hand-applied and breaks unevenly across each surface — lighter where it thins over the well, deeper in the recesses — so the two plates sit together as a matched pair rather than identical copies. The rims are irregular and hand-formed, the feet left unglazed to show the stoneware body. Acquired through Yamane's authorised European distributor.
Handsome as serving pieces and equally at home displayed on a dresser or console. Shōwa period.
