https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/renarasAn exceptional one-of-a-kind Japanese silk wall tapestry, created from a formal vintage fukuro-obi woven in Nishijin kinran brocade with gold-foil-wrapped thread on a champagne silk ground.
This striking textile artwork presents an elaborate Edo-period inspired procession scene across the full length of the silk: figures crossing bridges, palanquins moving beneath shop awnings, market stalls, architectural details, and richly coloured narrative vignettes set against a luminous gold field. Its composition follows the visual tradition of the Japanese emakimono, or picture scroll, where a story unfolds scene by scene in continuous movement.
At this scale and level of intricacy, the original obi was not an ordinary textile but a ceremonial statement piece. Renaras has transformed it into a large decorative wall hanging while preserving the visible woven surface exactly as it was created. The result is a museum-quality Japanese textile artwork for a significant interior.
This is the most complex textile currently in the Renaras collection.
Design and Craftsmanship
The tapestry has been cut and reimagined from the original fukuro-obi, the double-layered sash traditionally worn with formal kimono for important ceremonial occasions. The silk has been professionally lined with an undyed support cloth to carry the weight of the metallic brocade and ensure a stable, elegant hang.
It is mounted between handmade hardwood bars at the top and bottom and finished with a leather hanging cord. The bars are included as part of the work. No metal touches the visible silk surface.
Nothing on the front of the silk has been altered. The textile hangs as it was woven, allowing the original Nishijin craftsmanship, gold thread, and narrative composition to remain fully visible.
Interior Placement
This is a commanding decorative work for interiors that require presence, depth, and cultural distinction. It is particularly suited to:
A principal wall in a private residence
A luxury hotel lobby or suite
A fine dining restaurant or members’ club
A gallery entrance or collector’s room
A curated interior with Japanese, Asian, contemporary, maximalist, or eclectic design influences
Its champagne-gold palette works beautifully with warm woods, plaster walls, lacquered surfaces, stone, bronze, low lighting, and contemporary furniture. It can act as the central artwork in a room rather than a supporting decorative accent.
The collector who acquires this piece is not simply decorating a wall. They are giving the room its focal point.
Cultural Context
The source textile is a fukuro-obi, one of the most formal types of Japanese obi. This example was woven in Nishijin kinran, a prestigious Kyoto brocade tradition known for silk grounds enriched with metallic gold thread.
The narrative procession recalls the world of Edo: travel, commerce, ceremony, architecture, and urban life condensed into a single woven panorama. In transforming the obi into a wall tapestry, Renaras follows the Japanese spirit of mottainai — honouring material, labour, and history by giving an exceptional textile a new life.
Each Renaras tapestry is unique. This piece exists once and will not be repeated.
Atelier Passport
The tapestry is accompanied by its Renaras atelier passport: a small handmade record documenting the silk’s first life, its transformation, and its completion in Amsterdam. The passport is signed and dated by the atelier.
