A bed runner with three cushions, made from a single 袋帯 (fukuro-obi) of ceremonial Japanese silk, late Showa to early Heisei period.
The obi carries mirrored pairs of peacocks woven in blue-grey on a champagne-gold ground. Each bird is built from small points of woven colour, in the manner of stippling. The tails fall the full width of the panel, and each feather ends in an eye-spot worked in gold. Coral blossoms and radial medallions in persimmon and blue sit between the birds. Fine gold thread runs through the ground weave.
Peacocks entered Japanese design through Buddhist art and became a recurring subject for formal obi in the twentieth century. An obi of this kind was woven for ceremonial dress.
Renaras, an Amsterdam atelier, cut and finished the set by hand. The runner holds one complete mirrored composition. One cushion is cut from the patterned face of the obi; the two others are in plain champagne silk.
Envelope pocket closure. No metal touches the silk. Dry clean only.
The set ships with a handmade atelier passport, signed and dated in Amsterdam.
