https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/roche-cowardIncredibly attractive pictorial rug from Sinkiang in Turkistan, dating to around 1910.
Khotan rugs, once known as Samarkand rugs, are beautiful and unique. Taking their influence from both China and the Middle East, they look like nothing else. Pictorial examples like these are very rare, and this a beautiful example.
It is difficult to adequately photograph or describe the colours in this rug. Through the subtle skills of the weaver and the effect of time on the dyes, there are a vast range of beautiful tones here. The lightest pinks are deep red at the roots, there are very pale greens hidden among the pinks. The ground ranges from soft, peachy oranges, through both brown and blush pinks. The left edge alone has the prettiest colours we've seen on a rug.
The pile is thick with a soft handle, lying flat left to right across the field, worn now in places, see images. Condition is generally excellent, it has just been professionally cleaned and the colours are strong and bright. There are four small of areas of professional repair (these are the darker, redder patches, close to the selvages at top and bottom). The ends are original, the selvages may be later. It lays flat and can still be used as a floor rug, though it does makes a wonderful wall hanging.
Rug is 203cm across by 147cm down. Please feel free to request further images.
