Item Details

Antique Georgian pair barley twist candlestick table lamps cast in solid brass, 1830`s ca, English.

This pair of antique lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has the following new components: lamp holder with a cream card cover, gold tone silk cable, white cord switch, white plug (UK Plug up to 250V) & clip on silk lampshade. Lightbulbs included. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a fine quality pair of brass antique English Georgian candlesticks converted into lamps. Georgian candlesticks often had a slender, elegant silhouette with a round base, clean lines and harmonious proportions, design features present in this pair.

The elegant simple sculptural form & delicate size make these lamps well proportioned for a shelf, console, bedside, sideboard or mantelpiece. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.

The barley twist design of each candlestick is full of exquisite movement & soft rounded details, a combination of handmade & early machine made features made of solid polished brass.

The round base is cast in solid brass, with a subtle concave shape with raised border. The round base, enhanced by subtle linear banding along the edge, is weighted, making them very stable.
On top of the base there is a brass turned knop that becomes the base of the barley twist stem leading to another smaller round knob under the solid polished brass sconce. Above, a new lamp holder covered by a new tall cream card candle tube, elongates the proportions of the lamp.

Both lamps are finished with quality new clip-on cream silk candle lampshades. The shade is tapered and has pleat detailing, complete with a fabric trim top & bottom. These lampshades are included in the price.

Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with new LED dimmable Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 40 Watts, which are included in the price.

These antique lamps are in very good condition for their age. The antique patina developed over the years has been preserved on the metal to keep the original character. The brass frames are sound with no damages, missing or broken parts. There are minor superficial age patina marks & rubbing, all in line with age & wear. The lampshades are new and in very good condition.

BARLEY TWIST FURNITURE HISTORY

The origin of barley twisting and fluted turnings can be traced back to late antiquity as a way of embellishing a turning.

Furniture with spiral-turned legs or trim became known as “barley twist” or “barley sugar,” because it resembled sticks of barley sugar used at the time.

Barley twisting was very popular in the 15th & 16th Centuries, first appearing in England and France, and having a revival in the 18th & 19th Centuries. Very fashionable in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods up to the 1930`s. Mostly in solid oak or walnut, it was used on column supports, often in table & chair legs but also in many different pieces of furniture.

English oak barley twist antique furniture is very much appreciated worldwide today for the quality & skill of the manufacturers at the time.
