Item Description

Pair Antique Empire style XIX Century dolphins/koi fish candlestick table lamps, spelter & brass,19th Century, French.

This pair of antique lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has the following new components: lamp holder with a cream card cover, gold silk cable, black cord switch, black plug (UK Plug up to 250V) and clip-on pleated cream silk lampshade. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a fine pair of French Empire period candlesticks of Neoclassical form circa 1830 converted into lamps. They have several design features typical of the French Empire period: the dolphin theme, the combination of Regency & Neoclassical styles, elegant proportions, luxury materials, crisp casting and heavy weight.

The elongated form & elegant proportions make these lamps well proportioned for the bedside or corridor. The design is classic, timeless & decorative. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Post Modern, Industrial or Contemporary.

The design consists of solid polished brass & spelter candlesticks. Most of the green enamel paint & gilt is still present on the metal. There is an attractive patina developed over the years that contrasts with the golden toned brass.

The composition of each candlestick consists of three dolphins made of spelter sitting on a tripartite hexagonal spelter base. The edge of the base is stepped. On top of the fish there is the well with acanthus leaf decoration & a brass knop that becomes the base of the main column which is also solid polished brass. The tripod column has three concave sides and three flat sides with a linear decoration that beautifully reflects the light. The column graduates to the shoulder, drip pan & bobeche, all of spelter with a foliate decoration. On top sits a new lamp holder covered by a new cream card candle tube.

These candlesticks were individually handmade so there are minor variations in design & proportions.

Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These bulbs are included in the price.

Each lamp is finished with a new clip-on cream silk candle lampshade. The shade is tapered and has wide pleat detailing, complete with a crepe trim top and bottom. It is lined in the same colour which enhances the glow of light.

These antique lamps are in very good condition for their age. The frames are sound with no damages or broken parts. The metal surfaces overall are in good condition with the original antique patina preserved, adding character & depth. The enamel and gilt have faded over the years exposing the metal underneath. There are superficial marks & patination in places in line with age. The 2 lampshades are new and in very good condition.
