Item Description

Pair of antique of Rococo style gilt bronze petite wall lights/sconces, twin arm with acanthus leaf decoration, 1920`s ca, French.

These antique wall lights have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired & earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to install. Each has new lamp holders with new card covers. These lights can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these sconces in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a petite pair of early 20th Century French sconces in the Rococo style. The organic form & delicate proportions make these wall lights well sized for a small room, bedroom or corridor. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Traditional, Hollywood Regency or Contemporary.

The design of each sconce consists of a leaf backplate in gilt bronze. The two arms are symmetrical with a scrolling pattern and an acanthus leaf decoration. The acanthus leaf has been used throughout history as a design feature. Being perennial acanthus is symbolic of longevity.

The frames are quality cast & crisp. They would have been individually cast, resulting in quality detail and slight variations between the two.

At the end of each arm there is a leaf bobeche supporting an E14 Candle lamp holder, covered by a removable cream card candle tube.

On the back of each frame there is a small ring to hang the sconce to the wall. The ring would securely hook onto a standard L shape screws (these screws are not provided but widely available online or in hardware stores).

These sconces are finished with antique clip-on card candle lampshades. The shade is tapered, gloss green on the outside with gold detailing. Inside is gold lined which enhances the glow of light. These four shades are included in the price.

These wall lights could also be displayed without the shades for a more traditional look (as photographed).

Each light carries 2 standard small screw light bulbs (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with Candle clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These are included in the price. It would be possible to use other (E14) Candle light bulbs.

Both sconces are in very good condition. The frames are sound with no damages or broken parts. The antique patina has been preserved. The gilt finish is in good condition, with a warm patina & minor marks. The 4 lampshades are in good condition with no cuts or damages, only minor marks on the card and some loses to the paint of the internal metal suspension arms, all in line with age.

FRENCH ROCOCO STYLE HISTORY

"Rococo," comes from the French word "rocaille" for rock and shell garden ornamentation. First appearing in the decorative arts, the Rococo style emphasized sinuous curves, and patterns based on flowers, vines, and shells. It is an exceptionally ornamental and theatrical style of architecture, art and decoration which combines asymmetry, scrolling curves, gilding, white and pastel colours, sculpted moulding, and trompe-l`oeil frescoes to create surprise and the illusion of motion and drama. It is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement, beginning in France in the 1730`s as a reaction against the more formal and geometric Louis XIV style.
