An early 20th-century oil painting on board by French artist Alfred Garcement (1842-1927), depicting a landscape at the edge of a wood. A large tree dominates the foreground, alongside smaller trees and bushes leading to houses in the distance, each rendered with precision suggesting fine observation.


Geometric angular branches echo the patches of light and shadow on the ground, contrasting with the foliage rendered in lively small brushwork. The composition is drenched in a vibrant camaïeu of greens, both light and dark.
