Item Details

A French Louis XV gilt gesso mirror, c. 1750. The frame is decorated with cross-hatched panels alternating with ample scrolls at the centres and corners, finished with acanthus foliage at the corners. Its elegant shaped form features bulging centres and corners, contrasting with a flat inner slip.


The highly decorative character of the Rococo ornament contrasts with honest provincial carving, giving the mirror a refined warmth. The gilding has developed a beautiful patina, revealing the red bole underneath, while the mercury mirror plate features a gentle foxing. A small-scale mirror with charming decorative presence.
