Item Details

A late 19th-century French oil painting on board, depicting the Sidi Abdallah Cherif Mausoleum in Tunis, signed and dated 1888 lower right. The domed form of the mausoleum occupies the centre of the composition, framed on both sides by trees and bushes, their canopy closing the image at the top and drawing the eye to the architecture. Light brushwork animates the foliage, set in quiet contrast with the geometric solidity of the building.


The palette of dark greens and browns creates a quiet contrast with the blue of the sky and the white of the architecture, while highlights of white add volume and convey the play of light


An atmospheric composition in the Orientalist taste, presented in its original wood and gilt frame.
