A French 19th-century oil painting on board depicting a Camargue bull set within a typical regional landscape of marshes, dotted with clusters of tall trees and with distant hills on the horizon. The scene is rendered in sweeping green hues, creating a striking contrast with the black and white of the bull and the orange of its horns. Painterly brushstrokes animate the surface, with the almost abstract expanses of marshland highlights the presence of the bull and its naturalistic stance, while giving the trees a sculptural quality. Folk in style, this is a rare and characterful piece with a distinctive Camargue subject, mounted in an antique gilded frame.
