Item Details

An early 20th-century French oil painting on board, depicting sailors on a boat. The composition centres on a standing man in a sailboat, with a woman looking toward the horizon on the left, a man on the right, and another man in the foreground, all set against a sail in the background.


The hull, sail and sailors are rendered in a warm camaïeu of browns, set against the blue of the sea and sky, creating a striking contrast with the white dress of the woman. The cross-like placement of the figures lends the scene a striking structure, while broad, almost study-like brushwork creates an evocative sense of movement, the edges of the picture left unpainted. Characterful details add a sense of realism, the men in functional workwear with sailor hats and scarves in red and white, the woman in an elegant flowing white dress and hat, each figure captured in a distinctive posture.
