A mid-18th century French faience plate from La Rochelle, decorated with a carnation in manganese surrounded by blue daisies and foliage. The lip features further flowers in blue and orange on elongated foliate stems, with a delicately shaped edge. The off-centred placement of the carnation lends the plate a relaxed elegance, while painterly brushwork in manganese highlights the form of the bloom.


A charming plate with botanical elegance and an almost naïve draftsmanship, characteristic of La Rochelle faience.
