Item Description
This midcentury oil painting on canvas by French artist Maurice Chapuis (1922-2010) portrays an abundant bouquet of irises arranged on a wooden chair within an interior setting. The elongated stems of the irises are depicted with flowing painterly brushstrokes, contrasting with the geometric lines of the furniture. This painting features evocative country details, from the shape of the chair to its rush seat and the simple cloths beneath the vase. The warm, enveloping palette of ochres contrasts with the vibrant blue, purple, and green hues of the irises. Signed and dated 1963, the generously sized artwork is elegantly framed in an antique Montparnasse frame.
A painter of landscapes, portraits, and still lives, this beautiful work is characteristic of Chapui’s use of warm colours and contrasting shapes. He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a member of the Societé Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
