A 1956 oil painting on board by Michael Argov (1920-1982), depicting a bouquet of flowers in vibrant red, yellow, blue, and green, arranged in a simple ceramic jug, set against an abstract background in a camaïeu of browns. Textured brushstrokes create dynamic movement, emphasised by the contrast between the large bouquet and the modest jug, while patches of colour convey the vibrancy of the flowers against the subdued tones of the background.


Argov trained in Tel Aviv and later at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, and divided his time between France and Israel between the 1950s and 1970s. Early works such as this demonstrate the influence of the School of Paris, with decorative style and flattened compositions, while his later paintings progressed towards simplified, geometric abstraction.


A rare early work, signed and dated 1956, presented in a 1950s Montparnasse frame, combining lively colour with striking composition.
