This 19th-century Westerwald jug is glazed in glossy cobalt blue over a warm grey ground and finished with a pewter lid. The body is decorated with sprays of flowers in reserves on the blue ground, framed by an intricate array of carved geometric ornaments and friezes. The spout is adorned with a mascaron, depicting a captivating chimeric face. Of generous size, the jug combines tactile carved textures with vibrant glaze. A distinctive example of German stoneware with striking sculptural presence.
