This work is understood to be a preparatory study for a large-scale sculpture
London-born Hatwell studied at Bromley College of Art, Borough Polytechnic under David Bomberg, and the Slade School of Fine Art. In 1958, he worked as an assistant to Henry Moore, a key influence on his career. He created his own style of sculpture, avoiding superfluous detail or decorative features, and was exhibited widely in Britain and abroad.
