Item Details

An oil on board interior still life by Simon E. Taib, signed and dated 1956. The intimate composition depicts a round table holding a vase of dark blue flowers and a small book, surrounded by curved wooden chairs, with details of the room loosely suggested behind. Worked in a palette of moss green, ochre, terracotta and deep blue, the painting has a richly textured surface, with expressive brushwork and overlapping passages of colour.


Although figurative in style, the painting shares elements of its earthy palette with Taib's later geometric abstract works of the 1970s, a small collection of which was acquired alongside this piece, together with an original poster documenting his 1977 exhibition at the Galerie d'Hallencourt in Autun, Burgundy.


Presented as found in a carved French Montparnasse-style frame, with a chalky cream finish and raised foliate decoration.
