Item Details

A Pair of Néo-Grec Grand Tour Patinated Bronze Vases Mounted as Lamps, Cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne from a Model by Henry Cahieux. Each vase features herm-headed handles framing a slender, elongated neck above a tapering body finely relief-cast with classical figures and anthemion motifs, set on square bases and later adapted to be mounted as lamps. Signed 'F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR' and 'HENRY CAHIEUX', this model was exhibited by Barbedienne at the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle to great acclaim, where it was praised for its refined classical inspiration. The tall, elegant form-with its flaring mouth and twin handles is derived from ancient Greek loutrophoroi, ceremonial vases used in marriage rituals. Henry Cahieux (1825-1854), a Parisian sculptor, provided Barbedienne with exclusive models in the néo-grec, Egyptian, and Japanese styles. He exhibited at the Salon from 1850 to 1853, with all his works cast by Barbedienne. As lamps, Rewired and PAT tested. Circa 1850.
