WW2 Sterling bomber Radio Compass Loop Antenna

Rare, unusual and very sculptural. This item has it all, it may remind you of an alien’s head or model of a Zeppelin. When actually a similar example is housed in the Smithsonian Design Museum. This object is dated from the 1930 – 1940 and would have originally sat on top of a WW2 bomber plane and named a Radio Compass Loop Antenna. Made from coated fabric it would have supported the Stirling bomber to find its route and guidance as it flew in the air. A highly sculptural object recently uncovered from Cambridge university and still in its cast metal support base. A worn-out marking is stamped at the base of this form as shown.
