Item Details

An 18th Century Carved Tobacconists counter top trade Sign,

Carved wood with polychrome decoration, in the form of a Blackamoor with tobacco leaf kilt and headdress with a tobacco roll under his arm.

There were several signs associated with the tobacconist, including the Blackamoor, the tobacco roll, the highlander, the jolly jack tar and the snuff rasp.

Until the end of the 18th century it was common for shops to rely on large visual signs to indicate their trades. A carved wooden figure of an African man carrying a pipe and a carrot of tobacco was a typical sign for a tobacconist shop.

This example is in good order, age related wear and his raised arm has been repaired at some stage.

The previous owner acquired the figure in 1965 from the newsagents on Hailsham Road Heathfield East Sussex when it changed hands and had a refit.
