Item Description
A rare and very original set of bow fronted pigment drawers, early 19th century in age.
Mahogany veneer, probably on pitch pine as they have a nice bit of weight to them. Remnants of the original pigment colour within the drawers. Lots of age related wear, reidue from mixing pigments on and around the drawers. Original hand painted script on all but two of the drawer fronts, showing among others
"Venetian Red" First recorded as a colour name in English in 1753, much used in Italian Renaissance paintings.
"Chrome Yellow" Used in the early 19th century, and was replaced with cadmium yellow as it contained lead, a toxic, heavy metal.
"Lamp Black" Originally made from soot collected from oil lamps and fireplaces
