Item Description
A odd pair of portraits very much in the manner of John (Tim Bobbin) Collier the Lancashire Hogarth.
The paintings portray Democritus Laughing and Heraclitus Weeping, taken from the original image by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, 1606-1669. Later again portrayed by R. Gaywood as a etching and published by John Overton London circa 1660.
The paintings are housed on their original lap jointed stretchers and very primitive bullnose frames, two sections have been lost and replaced.
18th century in age, English in origins
Age related wear, abrasions and craquelure a small tear in the canvas to Democritus
each portrait is 72/78/5cm
