19th century, hand painted pine panel bearing a passage by Isaac Watts


“Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away, They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day”


This famous stanza comes from the hymn "O God, Our Help in Ages Past" (originally titled "Our God, Our Help"), written by Isaac Watts in 1708 as a paraphrase of Psalm 90. It reflects on the fleeting nature of human life compared to the eternal nature of God, using imagery of a fast-moving river and vanishing dreams.


Published in 1719. It became popular immediately upon publication and has remained a staple in English-speaking Protestant churches, state funerals, and remembrance services for over 300 years.


Isaac Watts was an English Congregational minister, hymn writer, theologian, and logician. He was a prolific and popular hymn writer and is credited with some 750 hymns. His works include "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross", "Joy to the World", among others.
