Item Details

A early 20th century sailors ditty box, with painted ‘Crown & Anchor’ lid and original dice.

C & A was a gambling game, its origins can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. The game was played among British sailors, merchant and fishing fleets

By repute a very simple game to play combined with favourable odds meant that the game was also played by sailors in pubs and this being the reason many have the name The Crown & Anchor. The game faded away towards the end of 19th century, but did have some popularity during World War 1 & 2. And this is where we would place this example circa 1930/40s.

The box is well constructed with dovetail joints, some pleasing elderly repairs, its original working key and lock. There also a few odd items that were in the box so these will be sold with the box and dice, a whistle and inkwell.
