Item Details

Beautiful and rare early 19th century casket lid from a cribbage or domino box. Fashioned by a prisoner of war in the 1820s. Entirely hand-carved and painted, depicting young women, bouquets of flowers and dandies. This piece shows a remarkable quality and craftsmanship. Many prisoners of war from the late 18th to early 19th centuries made handcrafted items that they sold or traded to acquire basic necessities such as soap, salt, cigarettes, and medicines. These items were made from found objects such as pine crates, sheep bones from food scraps, string and straw.

Each watercolour has its original glazed window, some missing carved elements but overall a fantastic piece of folk art.
