Item Details

A unusual oil on board circa 1820 of a slave and his owner. The image depicts a middle age male, his wife and child in a outhouse. The board has a gesso skin upon that oil has been applied, overall cracking and some lose of paint (one elderly repair in the centre). The Slave is likely to be of been of East African origins and would of been forced to work on sugar and tobacco plantation, or felling ebony trees. Mauritius was the last place in the British colonies to abolish slavery, on 1 February 1835.
