Antique Venetian Cheval Mirror with Carved Giltwood Frame.


A beautiful antique cheval (or dressing) mirror featuring a richly aged glass with slight foxing, set within a rectangular giltwood frame topped by an ornate floral crest. The angle of the mirror is adjustable via its original thumb screws, adding both charm and functionality.


The piece is supported by a period lyre-shaped giltwood and gesso show frame, with elegant sabre-shaped uprights adorned with scrolling foliage. A central cross stretcher joins the uprights and features an attractive scallop shell motif at its centre.


The base is skilfully carved with four mythical dolphin-shaped legs, each terminating in brass castors.


A stunning and highly decorative mirror that remains functional and full of character.


In good condition for its age, with minor gesso losses in places and light foxing to the mirror plate. The mirror on its own measures 110cm x 62cm wide.
