Item Details

A handsome matched pair of cylindrical bedside cabinets, likely Victorian late 19th century.

Crafted in mahogany with richly figured veneers, the bodies are fluted and faceted in an architectural, column-like form. Each top is inset with a rouge marble disc within a substantial rounded moulded edge, practical for lamps or a drink and attractive against the warm timber. The cupboards open with small metal knob pulls to reveal a shelved interior, each with a fixed shelf creating two compartments; some door panels retain small internal trays, suggesting original practicality.

The cabinets stand on stepped octagonal plinth bases that add presence while keeping the footprint compact. Colour and patina are pleasing throughout, with the lively grain of the mahogany reading particularly well across the flutes. A decorative and useful pair, equally suited as bedside cabinets, sofa ends or occasional lamp tables.

Condition: Good decorative order with age-related wear. Scattered veneer chips and small losses in places, old marks and knocks to edges and mouldings, and surface wear to the marble consistent with use. Doors operate well and the pair is stable and ready to place. Dimensions (each): 79 cm high × 43 cm wide × 43 cm deep. Cylindrical body approx. 39 cm diameter.
