Item Details

A particularly handsome Regency mahogany chiffonier bookcase, circa 1820/30, of superb colour and with a rich combination of ebony, brass and carved decoration. The rectangular mahogany top is finely edged with ebony line inlay, terminating at the corners with elegant scrolling and central motifs. Below sit a large and smaller drawer, both framed with ebony cockbeading and fitted with decorative circular metal handles. Between them is a striking brass-inlaid panel of scrolling foliate and classical ornament, providing a wonderful focal point.

The lower section incorporates a useful shelf and is enclosed by a pair of glazed doors with a highly decorative repeating brass crescent design. Ebony detailing continues around the doors and along the plinth, giving the cabinet a smart architectural appearance. The sweeping cabriole supports are carved to the knees with acanthus leaves, terminating in elegant scrolls centred by concentric circular roundels.

Below, the reverse-breakfront plinth stands on wonderfully carved lion’s paw feet to the front, enriched with further carved scrollwork, and bun feet to the rear. A beautifully proportioned and highly decorative piece of Regency furniture, with a rich, warm patina and particularly good detailing throughout.

Although traditionally described as a chiffonier bookcase, it would work equally well today as a bookcase, drinks cabinet or display cabinet.

The door lock catch is a later replacement. Key present
