Item Description
The Lighthouse, Newhaven. Oil Painting by William Hyams (1878-52). An extremely well executed oil painting of the Lighthouse at Newhaven in Sussex. Fishermen in their boats to the foreground with the lighthouse in the middle ground and a large cloudy sky with boats in the distance giving good perspective. Canvas laid on board. Initialed with a 1936 Brighton Art Galleries Exhibition label to reverse.
William Hyams (1878-1952) was born in Portsmouth, but spent his childhood in Guernsey and is known for his land and seascapes. He studied at Brighton School of Art and spent some years at sea which gave him the opportunity to paint marine subjects. Exhibited at the R.A., R.I., in the provinces, and abroad. Painted many Sussex land and coastal scenes and was represented in various Brighton and Hove Art Galleries and was also Chairman of the Brighton Arts Club in 1947.
