This is a truly fabulous and rare pair of fabulous Italian Sphinxes that were discovered recently in Naples. Dating from the 19th century this magnificent pair of decorative embellishments is hand carved from wood with great artistry and imagination. Such Egyptian inspired items were en vogue during the 1800's bringing a certain aura of magic and mysticism to lavish interiors - and the love for such treasures captivated interiors as well as opulent facades, public gardens etc for a century as far as the Art Deco period. Each Sphinx measures about 40 x 18 x 30 cm or approximately 15.7 x 7 x 11.8 inches and they are most probably carved from darkened oak. They are in lovely antique condition with some signs of ageing expected from items of this period. They are exactly as I discovered them. For the full condition please refer to the images.
