This is an absolutely fascinating and rare antique Italian oil lamp from Rome that dates from the second half of the 18th century. It is a remarkable treasure created from a hand carved yellow marble with a lion's head. On one side it is engraved Roma [Rome], while on the other side are latin numbers MDCCLXVII , translating as the year of 1767 when the lamp was created. There is a carved handle on its back. I only once discovered a similar item which had a ram's head instead of the lion as in this fabulous example. It measures about 12.5 x 37 x 15.5 cm or approximately 5 x 14.5 x 6 inches and it is in lovely antique condition with signs of ageing mainly seen in a stunning patina created by the passage of time. This is an ancient treasure of captivating sculptural quality that would look just marvellous in any stylish and unique interior as well as an exterior including gardens, conservatories, balconies etc. It is exactly as I discovered it recently in Rome.
