Item Description
An original 18th century gilded and carved pine eagle above an oval patera, circa 1790.
Previously forming part of a Georgian mirror pediment (see pictures), this architectural eagle ornament is a testament to popular neoclassical styling of the period. It is superbly carved, details of the eagle with wings outspread and the oval patera framed with a wreath, still clear and distinguishable after more than 230 years.
At the same time, it shows its age with an attractive timeworn look and distressed gilding in areas that only adds to its unique beauty.
A hook to the back allows this eagle sculpture to be attached to a wall, looking particularly striking situated above a mantelpiece or as a feature piece of wall decoration in a drawing room, office or hallway.
Provenance: Ossowski, Pimlico Road
