An antique pair of Glazed Stoneware Jardinieres.


Dating from circa 1900, this spectacular pair of towering urns are a prime example of German Westerwald salt glazed pottery.


The striking cobalt blue over an off-white base showcases every intricacy of the complex designs.


The columns begin with interchanging lions and flowers, above beaded bands with foliage. Stepping inwards, rolling plumes of ivy are topped with mythical green men. Further banding like jewelled embellishments are topped with fiery acanthus leaves. Bacchus masks extend in high relief with twisting horns that weave upwards into the section above.


The story continues into the second tier of the lavish columns, seemingly gripped in place by the horns below. Winged putti sit between repeating jewels below opening petals of which the top half of the column blooms.


The pedestals culminate in a second band of mythical creatures, which widen to the base of each Jardinière.


Adorned with Greek columns and urns, the highly decorated pots have varying designs of Putti between ribbons and jewels.


Finished with flowing griffons as handles, these pieces showcase the pinnacle of Westerwald design. Every viewing reveals another hidden detail, and although a matching pair, the colours interchange at different points to add distinction.


These would suit a garden room, orangery or atrium, looking for a centrepiece to showcase exotic plants or flowers.

CONDITION REPORT


Transports as 4 pieces. No liners with holes though the bases. No obvious faults on urns aside from minor chips and losses. Pedestals are constructed from two sections with losses and chips throughout. Each pedestal has 3 figures with headgear. One has 2 losses the other has 1. One pedestal has been repaired near the base and has a strengthening rod through the centre hidden when urn is in place.
